Animal-Assisted Interventions (AAI) is dedicated to advancing knowledge of and research about animals in service and therapy.

We provide consultation, education, and therapy services, specializing in animal-assisted activities (AAA), animal-assisted therapy (AAT), and assistance/service animals. We provide services to people of all ages, in a variety of settings.

What are AAI?
Animal-assisted interventions are therapeutic processes that intentionally include or involve animals as part of the process (Krueger, 2004). Animal-Assisted Therapy, Animal-Assisted Activities, and assistance animals are some examples of animal-assisted interventions.

Assistance Animals

Have you ever heard of a helper monkey? How about a guide horse? Service and assistance animals are becoming more prevalent in the United States and abroad. Although most commonly, service animals are dogs, other animals also fulfill these roles.

Service animals can be considered an assistive technology and/or adaptive strategy to help people with disabilities maximize their independence.

Expenses to train or obtain a service animal can be reimbursed through a health care flexible spending account.

We have the knowledge to advise people with disabilities in choosing a service animal, and facilitate the application process.

Animal-Assisted Activities

Therapeutic and recreational activities can be more motivating and more productive when animals are incorporated.

Activity directors can invite specially trained and screened visiting animals in to a nursing home to visit residents (AAA).

Occupational, physical, or speech therapists can be hippotherapy practitioners, using horses and riding as a treatment modality (AAT).

We have experience providing both services in a variety of settings, with multiple species of animals.

Based on this experience, we provide consultation and recommendations for implementing AAT and/or AAA.
